The drag queens were getting very curious glances from the members of the Binding Ties Book Society that occupied the upper reading level. It was like someone had yanked life-sized characters from several books and brought them into existence. As the book club members discussed their latest read, one or more had their eyes fixated on the drag queens, like they were trying to figure out if they were male or female.

“Do you see them staring at us?” Vanessa asked.

“I wonder what they’re thinking,” Melbourne Toast said.

“I know what I’m thinking,” Lady Huckleberry said. “I’m thinking I’ve finally crossed paths with the cast of Cocoon.”

Gigi Topp sneered. “You’re not too far from being those people yourself. Hell, your boobs already sag to your waistline.”

“You’re one to talk, Grandma Moses. You were around before book clubs were invented. Hell, you were around before there were books.”

Zachary sighed. “If you bitches are finished slopping sugar on each other, I’d like to get back to talking about the protesters who plan to be at tonight’s show.”

Morgan D’Mare tossed her black feather boa over her shoulder. “I say bring it on. Any publicity is good publicity.”

“Whoever came up with that saying never had a dead drag queen land in their trash dumpster,” Lady Huckleberry said.

“Zachary, what are you suggesting we do?” Gigi asked.

“Just stick together when you can. Try to avoid any groups or mobs. It’s likely one person might be responsible for killing Emerald, but frightened townspeople could be just as dangerous.” Zachary took a sip of tea. “We’ve already had twenty people with tickets for tonight’s show ask for refunds, and there may be more people pulling out of the other shows.”

Vanessa huffed. “Remember the old days when a dead gay man or drag queen didn’t attract much attention? I guess that’s the price of equality.”

Gigi rolled her eyes. “Zachary, have the authorities figured out who murdered Emerald? I know that detective was asking us questions earlier, but surely they don’t suspect us. We’re performers—dancers, comedians, lip sync artists. We don’t kill people.”

“You’re also an enigma, Gigi, a curiosity even. Drag queens don’t regularly walk down the streets in Gresham. Kyle and Russell drag it up, but only for special occasions like parades and festivals. Besides being entertaining, you five are also educating that there are a variety of people in the world with different lifestyles.”

“Still, even though we’re unknown, that doesn’t mean we’re bad.”

“Get real, Gigi,” Morgan said. “That’s small-town America. If you don’t fit in the mold of what society thinks you should be, then they think you’re a threat to all that is good and pure.”

“It’s not that way so much anymore, my dear,” Vanessa said. “Look at what just happened the other day with the federal courts overturning Wisconsin’s ban on gay marriage. Attitudes are changing, even in small towns like this.”

“If attitudes are changing, why are there going to be protesters at tonight’s show? Why are people asking for their money back? You can wrap it up
